General Description:

  • Serves as support to hard of hearing and/or deaf students; ensures that student needs are met as per core curricular expectations and/or Individual Education Plan; supports students within the general education classroom and work toward assisting student toward independence

 Qualifications:       

  1. Minimum requirement of a high school diploma
  2. Graduate of an Interpreter Training Program; hold a valid BEI 1 or EIPA 3.5 certification acceptable within the State of Michigan or hold National Certification. Be listed on the Michigan Online Interpreter System and possess a valid Michigan Certification card.
  3. Must meet one of the District’s paraprofessional requirements:
    1. Complete at least 2 years of study in an institution of higher education; OR
    2. Associate’s Degree or higher; OR
    3. Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instruction reading, writing and mathematics
  4. Experience as an aide preferred and ability to communicate/support efforts to enable student progress toward his/her individual goals
  5. Serve as an appropriate role model for other aides as they work toward helping students achieve goals and independence
  6. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform educational support tasks as directed
  7. Be in good physical health to be able to physically manage/support students at times
  8. Be able to demonstrate appropriate communication skills, both oral and written
  9. Must be prompt, courteous and have a record of good attendance in any employment
  10. Working knowledge of record keeping procedures and good organizational skills
  11. Have a valid Michigan driver’s license

 Essential Functions:

  1. Provide direct support to hard of hearing/deaf students as defined by the Michigan Department of Education (Example: American Sign Language) and as specified in students’ individual education plan
  2. Provide support to classroom teacher to help student attain educational goals
  3. Maintain confidentiality at all times regarding student information    
  4. Implement strategies as directed to help students make progress
  5. Effectively communicate and cooperate with all staff in carrying out duties
  6. Keep educational progress up to date as directed
  7. Implement interventions designed to help students in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and other subjects as directed by the teacher

 Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings
  2. Help to instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values
  3. Conducts other duties related to the aide’s duties assigned by the building principal
  4. Proper grooming and attire have a positive impact on the school’s image; this position involves direct service on a daily basis and the employee should maintain work attire and appearance that reflects an efficient, orderly and professionally operated organization

 Additional Working Conditions:

  1. Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
  2. Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions
  3. Occasional interaction among unruly children
  4. Other tasks as determined by the School Principal or his/her designee

Miscellaneous:

  1. May be required to drive his/her personal vehicle and provide their own transportation within the district as well as to job-related functions outside the district
  2. May come in contact with blood-borne pathogens in the course of fulfilling the responsibilities of this position
  3. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district.
  4. Is responsible for any and all other duties as may be assigned by the Principal/Superintendent
