Title: Teacher Assistant
Reports to: Building Principal
Division of: Compensatory Education
Employment Status: School Year
General Description:
- Serves as support to students within a classroom (s) or in a small group setting to ensure student academic needs are met as per core curricular expectations and provide intervention to those showing need on assessments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified Teacher
- Eligible for substitute teaching as determined by the State of Michigan
- Complete at least two years of study in an institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours); or
- Obtain an Associate’s Degree (or higher); or
- Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform educational support tasks as directed.
- Be able to demonstrate appropriate communication skills, both oral and written.
- Must be prompt, courteous and have a record of good attendance in any employment
- Working knowledge of record keeping procedures and good organizational skills
- Have a valid Michigan driver’s license
Essential Functions:
- Work with classroom and intervention teachers to provide support / intervention to students performing below grade level.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times regarding student information.
- Implement strategies as directed to help students make academic progress
- Effectively communicate and cooperate with all staff in carrying out duties.
- Keep educational progress up to date as directed.
- Implement interventions designed to help students in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and other subjects as directed by the teacher.
Other Duties / Responsibilities / Working Conditions:
- Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings
- May be called upon to sub for classroom teachers when there is a shortage; all substitute teacher time will be hours listed under the general fund category
- Conducts other duties related to the aide’s duties assigned by the building principal
- Proper grooming and attire have a positive impact on the school’s image. This position involves direct service on a daily basis and the employee should maintain work attire and appearance that reflects an efficient, orderly and professionally operated organization.
- Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
- Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions
- Occasional interaction among unruly children
- Other tasks as determined by the school principal or his/her designee
